Community Public Access Defibrillator (cPAD)

“In the UK alone, figures show that approximately 200 people per day suffer a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Moreover, British Heart Foundation statistics show that for every minute that passes, the chances of survival decrease by 14%. AEDs need to as common as fire extinguishers in all public places and work environments because they are equally as important when saving lives. The Community Heartbeat scheme is fantastic and should be held up as the gold standard for community defibrillation programmes across the country.”

“An AED is a portable defibrillator which uses intelligent technology to shock a ‘shockable’ heart rhythm. When applied to a patient, a sequence of voice commands and screen messages guide the user through the defibrillation process. This means the machine may be used safely by people with no medical background. The simplicity of modern AED technology has opened a window for the public to take on a key role supporting the emergency services who may be hindererd by the time it takes to reach a patient.”

Community Heartbeat Tust

You may or may not be aware that a scheme exists which would enable us to purchase just such a defibrillator. For just £1, we can also purchase our now redundant phone box by the Village Green, to house one defibrillator and the owners of Rooksbridge Post Office, Danny and Sandy Lawrence, have agreed that a second one could be placed on the wall of Rooksbridge Post Office. The Community Heartbeat Trust is a national charity focussed on the provision of life saving defibrillation equipment to local communities.

As a Parish Council, we feel that the provision of two cPADs could be of enormous benefit to the whole community – residential and commercial - and if even one life is saved, the investment will have been worthwhile.

The total cost which would include a public open evening to understand the defibrillator and to learn Basic Life Support, would be £1875 each. I am therefore appealing to you in the hope that you will feel able to make a contribution towards this very worthwhile investment which could save your life, the life of one of your employees or the life of a family member or friend.

We have a number of businesses located within East Brent, Rooksbridge and Edingworth and I feel confident that we can raise sufficient funds. Please contact me if you would like any further information or visit the website: www.communityheartbeat.org.uk. Contributions can be made to East Brent Parish Council (cPAD fund).
